The Annual Backyard Festival is sponsored by the Harbour Island Tourist Office and many of those who originate from Harbour Island usually come home for it. It is highly anticipated by visitors and locals each year and it attracts people from the neighboring islands of Eleuthera and Nassau.

The theme of the event is “Mama’s Backyard,” a family-oriented atmosphere providing the ultimate Bahamian experience. Bay Street is turned into a literal backyard, including an old clothesline, lanterns, phones, boats, washboards and tin tubs to name a few. Local artists present demonstrations to kids, locals, and most importantly tourists. The performance is done to show visitors what local life was like one hundred years ago, and to honor the ancestry of local Bahamian culture.

In addition, there are various competitions including washing and hanging clothes on the line, and the most anticipated competition is “catch the chicken.” Visitors are also able to participate in games such as shooting marbles, onion peeling, hopscotch, and the egg race. Live music is also performed as a Junkanoo entourage dances in the street.
