The Festival of Lights in Harbour Island in the Bahamas is designed to provide an impressive display for visitors and locals by decorating each tree on Bay Street with festive white Christmas lights. Lighting of the palm trees occurs on the first Friday of December. It allows for the community to come together and enjoy a true festive Christmas spirit. Colorful large light bulbs and hanging ornaments are used to decorate the Fig Tree. Light art displays are installed along the festival route, and three boats lit with changing colors are afloat in the harbor.
Children look forward to the event all year, as it includes presents and Christmas carols, sung by a live band. Junkanoo performers also invade Dunesmoretown, dancing till the sun comes up. Food and drinks are available for purchase; with all proceeds going towards community infrastructure.
