DPM Cracks Briland tourism product, Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper has expressed concerns about the deteriorating state of Harbour Island’s tourism product, warning that if the island’s issues are not addressed, its appeal as a top destination could be at risk. Speaking at the Harbour Island Business Outlook conference, Cooper highlighted concerns such as littering, abandoned vehicles, dilapidated buildings, and overall poor maintenance. These issues have been reflected in tourist exit surveys submitted to the Ministry of Tourism.

Cooper, who is also the Minister of Tourism, Investments, and Aviation, emphasized the need for local leadership and ownership in preserving Harbour Island’s charm. While acknowledging the government’s limited budget, he called for collaboration between local stakeholders and the island’s wealthy homeowners, many of whom are billionaires and millionaires who have strong ties to the community. He proposed using public-private partnerships (PPPs) as a model to address infrastructure challenges and ensure sustainable development.

The Deputy Prime Minister urged the residents of Harbour Island and Eleuthera to take pride in their communities, emphasizing that maintaining the island’s pristine condition is essential to its long-term success. He noted that Harbour Island remains a paradise but is showing signs of neglect that need immediate attention. Cooper encouraged tapping into the resources of affluent homeowners to support projects aimed at enhancing the island’s infrastructure and preserving its natural beauty.

Cooper concluded by stressing the importance of partnership among the government, local community, tourism industry, and wealthy residents to ensure Harbour Island remains one of the most beautiful and sought-after destinations in The Bahamas.
